Turning humans into SysAdmins (without having to be one first)

by Julien Fiegehenn (‎simbabque‎) (Hannover.pm London.pm)

Turning humans into SysAdmins (without having to be one first) aimed at Any and is held in English. This talk starts on 2026-03-18 at 14:20 for 20 minutes. It takes place at the Room 1.

For years, I’ve used my German apprenticeship roots (Fachinformatiker) and trainer certification (AEVO) to turn humans into Perl developers. But recently, I faced a new challenge: building a training program for a SysAdmin trainee—a role I’ve never actually held.

In this session, I’ll show you how I’m using Gemini to "port" my proven developer mentorship frameworks into the world of Systems Administration. I’ll break down my Triangulation Method: synthesising official German standards with real-world transcripts from my current SysAdmin team to build a bespoke training road map.

We will cover:

The AI Domain-Translator: Using LLMs to bridge the gap between your mentorship expertise and unfamiliar technical stacks.

The Data Input: How to combine official frameworks (Ausbildungsrahmenplan) with internal team interviews to create grounded, hallucination-free documents.

Hiring Shifting: Adapting the search from STEM graduates (Dev) to IT support professionals (SysAdmin).

Scaling Mentorship: Learning to treat your training plans as "source code" that can be compiled for any career path.

Learn how to decouple your ability to teach from your specific technical domain, allowing you to grow your team in directions you haven't even travelled yet.
