Leap seconds survived their attempted assassination at the 2012 World Radiocommunication Conference, and in the aftermath the debate has widened. It is now recognised that programming libraries have a vital role to play in handling time scales in the future. This talk will discuss the problem space around leap seconds, the flawed 2012 proposal, and recent developments on the issue, including the kind of time API that will be needed in the future. The talk will be light on code.
