Changing Image of Perl

by Wendy Van Dijk (‎woolfy‎) (Amsterdam.pm , Vlaanderen.pm, Niederrhein.pm, perl6.pm)

Changing Image of Perl aimed at Any and is held in English. This talk starts on 2018-04-06 at 10:10 for 20 minutes. It takes place at the Dom.

The image of Perl became more and more negative after the beginning of this century, and some of the reasons for this were perceived stagnation in development, and flamewars, and obfuscated Perl, and the rise of other programming languages. The problems were noticed and many in the Perl-community cared about this, so attempts to stop the flamewars and the obfuscated code were made and with some success. More conferences, workshops and hackathons were organised. Efforts were made to make code better documented, to have better practices in coding, to be friendlier towards newbies and to people with questions, and to be more visible in general. Things changed so much, we nowadays even get compliments at open source conferences! I will talk about our booths and devroom at FOSDEM, and our Perl-presence at OSCON and other open source conferences, and our own Perl-swag. It's a one-sided view from me personally, not a scientific research.
