The GPW2025 Community Sustainability Panel

by Salve J. Nilsen (‎sjn‎) (Oslo.pm)

The GPW2025 Community Sustainability Panel aimed at Any and is held in English. This talk starts on 2025-05-13 at 11:20 for 60 minutes. It takes place at the Room 1.

Over 30 years, the world has changed in many ways, and Perl, CPAN and it's related communities are still around.

Open Source has "won" everywhere, the software development landscape has evolved and become truly global, and everyone involved has not only had to come to terms with the changing trends, but also clashes between cultures and values, pressure from commercial interests, changes in individual's motivations, and in the recent years, the introduction of horizontal (meaning "applies to everyone") regulations and the introduction of large language models.

Our communities are still around, though! And so is our software - deeply embedded in value chains and critical infrastructure throughout the world.

What values and features in our communities have survived? What can the Open Source world still learn from us? And just as important – what lesson should we learn from others, so these communities stemming from Perl can continue to thrive for another 30 years?

This panel hopes to explore some of these questions in an open conversation between the participants and the audience. Panel participants are Ferenc Erki (‎FErki‎), Julien Fiegehenn (‎simbabque‎), ⁨Sören M. Laird Sörries⁩ and Salve J. Nilsen.
