We perceive sound by detecting changes in air pressure. A single one-dimensional function, pressure over time, can represent music, noise, or speech.
I'll use Perl (with the "class" feature) to create some such functions. The modules in the PDL distribution are used to calculate the functions in real time, and the GUI toolkit Prima helps with displaying the functions and to visualize frequency spectra.
