DESCRIPTION:This talk presents an alternative history of Perl\, in a univer
 se where no-one threw any mugs.\n\nI can't change history. My algorithms (
 and estimates) never run in constant time\, so even if parallel universes 
 exist\, we still can't reach them.\n\nBut what if a parallel universe exis
 ts\, where no-one threw any mugs\, and the Perl 6 project we know had neve
 r started? This talk explores an alternative fictional history\, where a o
 nly a couple of key events turned out differently\, and ponders how things
  evolved\, and whether history converges.\n\nIn this tall we'll learn abou
 t many things in Perl's history\, and contrast Perl's current situation wi
 th analogous dynamic languages and what could have been. Discover the wond
 erful BUFFIE and Cube projects (and how they went wrong)\, and how they ma
 p to the tricky problems in our universe.\n\nBased on more facts™ than you
  might first realise - many things presented as fiction are actually prett

 all the implementations in various languages behave differently.\n\n* Why 
 is that? I show you YAML examples that make you cry (at least if you devel
 op a parser).\n\n* Can we fix that?\n\n* Is there a test suite that I can 
 use if I want to implement a parser (in any language)?\n\n* Can I quickly 
 find out how different frameworks are parsing my YAML or do I have to inst

 nMore problematic is that perl5 is piling up more and more severe security
  issues and continues to destroy more stuff than it is fixing\, not talkin

 6.\n\ncperl already added many perl6 features\, and is perl5 backcompat.\n
 cperl fixed proper JSON\, YAML\, Storable\, Config\, and most of the toolc
 hain modules.\nMany exciting perl6 features are in work\, such as native a

DESCRIPTION:Perl 5 is distributed without any warranty of fitness for a par
 ticular purpose\, but it has without doubt proven to be useful for at leas
 t some purposes. As for the purpose of doing precise math\, a task not unh
 eard of in the world of programming\, we are still struggling with annoyin
 g limitations\, however.\n\nPerl has been equipped with useful math capabi
 lities for ages\, such as object orientation\, operator overloading\, inte
 rfaces to external libraries\, and modules dealing with big numbers both i
 n the core distribution and on CPAN. Sadly\, current solutions haven't rea
 ched an acceptable standard in stability nor correctness so far.\n\nThe ta
 lk will discuss some of these limitations and the lessons to be learned fo
 r users\, module authors and even language designers. A brief look into ot
 her languages\, namely Perl 6 and Python\, will give some perspective abou
 t other\, if not fundamentally different\, approaches.
